How To Reset Oil Change Light

If you have any issues or questions on the Oil Change Light Reset Procedure please read the information below or check our Frequently Asked Questions page HERE. The information on this site is not intended as repair advice and we are not responsible for any actions you take on any vehicle.

Oil Life Monitor

Many late-model vehicles are equipped with an oil life monitor system. These systems use your engines computer to calculate when you need an oil change based on input from your vehicle’s engine sensors. When your vehicles computer calculates all of these inputs and decides its time for an oil change it will turn on a light or message on your dashboard. You will usually see this message anywhere between 5000 miles (8,000 km) and 8000 miles (13,000 km) depending on the vehicle and driving conditions.

Do I Have An Oil Life Monitor

The first step would be to find out if your vehicle has an oil life monitor. The best place to find out is your owner’s manual. Take a look at how your oil life monitor communicates. Some will simply turn on a light in your dash, or show a written message such as “CHANGE ENGINE OIL”. Others will show the percentage of oil life remaining “OIL LIFE 65%”. Once you know if your vehicle has an oil life monitor and how it communicates you can use it to effectively track your oil changes.

Oil Life Monitor Reset Procedure

When you get your oil changed your oil life monitor must be manually reset. If the oil life monitor is not reset when your oil is changed the system has no way of tracking the oil life and will turn on the change oil warning prematurely. There are so many systems and reset procedures that it is very hard for Service Technicians to keep track of them. If the change oil warning is not on at the when you get your oil changed your Technician may not even know your vehicle has an oil life monitor system and it may not get reset. Let your Technician know your vehicle has an oil life monitor and ask him to reset it. If you learn to reset the system yourself after servicing then you will be sure it’s getting done and you are taking full advantage of the system.

Use the Correct Oil

It’s also important to note that these systems are calibrated to work with the factory-recommended oil. If you use a lower quality oil you may damage your engine by following the oil life monitor. Always use the manufacture recommended oil or an equivalent.

Change Your Oil At Least Once Per Year

Even if your oil life monitor is not telling you its time for an oil change yet it might be time for a change. Some manufactures recommend changing your oil at least once a year regardless of the oil life monitor. Take care of your vehicle and you will get where you need to go safely and efficiently. You will never hurt your vehicle by servicing it to often.
